Microdiscectomy
The goal of a microdiscectomy is typically to relieve pressure on nerves by removing herniated disc material. In a microdiscectomy case, a small incision is made in the back over the spinal level of the herniated disc. The muscle is carefully separated from the surface of the underlying bone and retractors and a microscope are used to see the operative site. Typically, a small amount of bone is removed so that the surgeon can get access to the disc. In most cases, the surgeon removes just the herniated part of the disc and any loose material.
