Spine Conditions
Vertebral Fracture Due To Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that creates an unwanted reduction in the density of bone. It makes your bones thin and fragile, resulting in a greater risk of fracture. Osteoporosis can lead to fractures anywhere in your skeleton, including the spine. This condition affects millions of older adults. Osteoporosis is most prevalent in people over the age of 60 and more common in women, but men can suffer from osteoporosis as well.

Cause

While the aging process is the most common cause of osteoporosis, other risk factors include: smoking, lack of calcium and vitamin D, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, genetics, race, gender, and body frame type.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of a vertebral fracture due to osteoporosis is pain and/or a physical change to the spine sometimes resulting in a condition known as "hunchback". As the term suggests, the upper region of the spine develops an obvious, unnatural hunch or curve.

Diagnosis

X-rays typically are used to diagnosis the condition.

Treatment

Treatment for vertebral fractures due to osteoporosis may include a variety of approaches: non-intervention, bracing and strengthening the fractured vertebra with material injected into the bone. Your physician will be best able to assess the options that may be appropriate for you.
