Discectomy

A discectomy is the surgical removal of herniated (bulging) disc material from the spinal canal. The bulging disc can put pressure on a nerve and cause pain. The surgery involves removing fragments of the herniated disc, but leaving most of the disc untouched. Some bone is typically removed to allow the surgeon easier access to the disc and to provide more room for the nerve to rest without making contact with the disc, thereby helping alleviate pain.
