Spine Conditions
Cervical Spinal Stenosis
Cervical Spinal Stenosis is similar to lumbar stenosis and affects the upper vertebra of the spine.
Cause
The causes of cervical spinal stenosis mirror those of lumbar spinal stenosis.
Symptoms
The symptoms associated with Cervical Spinal Stenosis are quite different than those related to lumbar spinal stenosis. Generally the symptoms involve the arms. Cervical Spinal Stenosis may cause pain, tingling and/or numbness in the shoulders, arms, and/or hands. Clumsy hand coordination may also occur.
Diagnosis
As with Lumbar Spinal Stenosis, the diagnosis for Cervical Spinal Stenosis is typically made taking an image of the spine through the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). On an MRI, your doctor can determine if the spaces in the spine have narrowed.
Treatment
Mild cases of Cervical Spinal Stenosis may be treated with rest, anti-inflammatory drugs, or muscle relaxants. Advanced stages of Cervical Spinal Stenosis may require surgery. Speak with your doctor to learn more about treatment options most suitable for you.
