Hear What Patients Have To Say / Patient Success Stories
Mary Martin

Since the age of 15, Mary Martin struggled with knee problems. As an active adult who ran several miles a day, Mary waited until the pain became intolerable to see an orthopedic specialist. "When you are in your mid 40s, having difficulty walking up a flight of stairs at work is not something you ever anticipate being a problem after being so active for most of your life," says Mary.

Mary had several conversations with her orthopedic surgeon regarding her treatment options. Her surgeon mentioned a patellofemoral replacement that might be a solution for her. She conducted a lot of research prior to making her decision. She visited Biomet.com and also requested patient education materials that were very helpful. Mary thought, "Finally, there is a way to fix the problem."

Prior to the surgery, Mary tried to keep her muscles strong to aid in her rehabilitation. She did a lot of straight leg raises with light ankle weights. Even though the pain would increase, the walking made a difference. In addition, she was able to exercise in the pool to take the pressure/weight off of her knee.

Mary's right knee was replaced with the Vanguard® PFR Knee. The Vanguard® PFR Knee is implanted utilizing a minimally invasive technique. The development of smaller incisions and accelerated rehabilitation are likely to improve the recovery.1 Having interacted with others who had gone through this type of surgery, she knew there would be several days of pain and weeks of therapy.

Mary was back to work after 10 days, and resumed normal activities in three to four weeks. She is able to go up and down stairs without pain, and rides her stationary bike. Mary says, "It has now been three and-a-half years, and I am still pleased with the results. It is one of the best things I've ever done."

While the patient in this story is a true joint replacement recipient, her results are not necessarily typical, indicative, or representative of all joint replacement patients. Implants have been used successfully in achieving restored mobility to many patients. However, as with any implanted device, there are factors affecting performance which ultimately result in variable outcomes, including levels of mobility and pain. These factors include, but are not limited to, the patient's pre and post-operative health conditions, weight, activity level, and adherence to instructions regarding the use of the Vanguard® PFR Knee. Due to these variables, it is not possible to predict specific results or patient satisfaction.

For additional information regarding joint replacement, refer to the patient risk information located at the top of this page and talk to your orthopedic surgeon.
