Maestro Wrist Reconstructive System (WRS)
The wrist joint contains eight bones that provide movement and support to the hand. The bones are covered with cartilage, which provide smooth, pain-free movement. When the cartilage is damaged from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis (AVN), scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC), or post-traumatic deformities, the result can be painfully limited hand movement.
The traditional treatment method for debilitating wrist conditions is fusion. Fusion means that the wrist bones are allowed to fuse together, eliminating painful bone-on-bone movement. While fusion can provide pain relief, the procedure results in severely limited to no movement in the hand. For patients who desire to continue living an active and productive lifestyle, Biomet offers the Maestro Wrist Reconstructive System (WRS).
The Maestro Wrist Reconstructive System (WRS), developed in conjunction with James Strickland, MD, Andrew Palmer, MD, and Thomas Graham, MD, is designed to restore range of motion (ROM) and function, as well as relieve pain in wrists affected by arthritis or other conditions. The implant incorporates several technologies developed by Biomet such as MacroBond® Coating (a thick layer of titanium plasma spray) and ArCom® Polyethylene (direct compression molded polyethylene). These technologies are designed to help increase the potential for long-term success of the implant.
The implant is also designed to accommodate the unique anatomy of both males and females. The range of sizing options allows surgeons to select the size of implant that is most appropriate for each patient.
Maestro, MacroBond® and Arcom® are trademarks of Biomet Manufacturing Corp.
