Joseph Trask
Joe is active and loves exploring the outdoors. Before osteoarthritis slowed him down, Joe ran in over 100 marathons and enjoyed hiking, camping, and snow skiing.
Joe first noticed pain in his right knee in 2001. Like millions of Americans with osteoarthritis, Joe lived with the pain. For several years, various non-surgical treatments helped Joe maintain activity, but they did not completely relieve his pain. Joe says, "I had been seeing my orthopedic doctor for years, but the pain was getting worse."
When it became painful to get out of bed, Joe knew it was time for surgery. Joe's surgeon recommended the Oxford® Partial Knee System. Joe says, "Many surgeons [I visited with] had a one solution fits all approach. With my active lifestyle, I needed a solution that I could live with."
After careful research, Joe decided that the Oxford® Partial knee would offer him the ability to return to his active lifestyle. One of Joe's goals was to get back on his feet as quickly as possible after surgery, and he stayed active before surgery to better prepare for surgery.
Joe was walking the day after surgery and was discharged only 32 hours after arriving at the hospital. Joe's success is partly due to his commitment to his physical therapy. "My continued good results are enough motivation to keep up the [physical] therapy," says Joe.
Joe was walking unassisted the day after surgery, driving three days after surgery, and walking five miles three weeks after surgery. "It is great to do daily activities without pain, and my limp is gone. If I had known about the Oxford® Knee, I probably would have had my knee fixed a couple of years ago," he states.
The decision to have joint replacement surgery can be intimidating. We hope Joe's story gives you valuable information regarding joint replacement surgery. When asked to summarize his experience, Joe simply says, "Keep a positive attitude."
