Dave Mason

"Dave is on the fast track to recovery."

Dave Mason, ski patrol and volunteer Captain of his local ambulance department cannot be held down, regardless of his numerous surgeries to repair limbs and extremities. It all started in the winter of 1982 when Dave collided with an angle iron ski lift tower, ultimately resulting in a total knee replacement in July of 2005.

Prior to surgery, Dave educated himself about Biomet's products and was inspired by Mary Lou Retton and her story of relief through a total hip replacement. Eventually, the pain in his right knee was so bad from the accident that he could barely walk. He was anxious to get surgery so he could return to his volunteer position on the ambulance as soon as possible. After the replacement, Dave did not look back.

"I felt like a million bucks after the replacement," said Dave of his Biomet® knee implant.

Soon after resuming his active lifestyle, Dave was involved in a motor vehicle accident, resulting in more surgeries. Years later, Dave's experience with surgeries and success with Biomet® implants encouraged him to consult his surgeon regarding pain in his left knee and right hip. Soon after the visit, Dave received a Biomet® knee and M2a-Magnum™ Taperloc® Hip, which provided the relief he needed to continue his pursuit of a fulfilling lifestyle. The M2a-Magnum Hip System has been carefully designed to provide maximum range of motion and ultra-low wear rates.1

After his hip replacement Dave said, "This was the best...no pain and good range of motion." After several weeks of rehabilitation, Dave is on the fast track to full recovery from his last surgery.

All surgeries carry risks. The main risks associated with the M2a-Magnum™ metal on metal hip include, but are not limited to, metal sensitivities and/or ion release, sensitivity reactions, infection, bone or device fracture, loosening, ossification, inadequate range of motion, leg length inconsistency, and wear, any of which could result in additional surgery. If your surgeon chooses this device for your specific treatment, please discuss all the risks with your surgeon. Some patients still experience pain or other issues.

While the patient in this story is a true joint replacement recipient, his results are not necessarily typical, indicative, or representative of all joint replacement patients. The implant has been used successfully in achieving restored mobility to many patients. However, as with any implanted device, there are factors affecting performance which ultimately result in variable outcomes, including levels of mobility and pain. These factors include, but are not limited to, the patient's pre and post-operative health conditions, weight, activity level, and adherence to instructions regarding the use of the joint implants. Due to these variables, it is not possible to predict specific results or patient satisfaction. For additional information on the M2a-Magnum™ Taperloc® Hip System, including risks and warnings, talk to your orthopedic surgeon and visit Biomet.com.
