Dave Bennett

Fifty-six year old Dave Bennett has been committed to education and coaching throughout his career. He has been named Principal of the Year in the state of Kentucky. He was also the Georgia High School Football Coach of the Year. As a coach, he won two National Championships in Volleyball with the Louisville-based volleyball club.

He started having knee pain 10 years ago. His normal activities changed from jogging and playing volleyball to cycling. He changed his diet, added supplements and replaced his impact sports. As the pain increased, Dave began to research total joint replacement implants. He quizzed several friends in the medical industry, and talked to various cyclists.

After consulting with an orthopedic surgeon, Dave scheduled his knee replacement surgery. On December, 3, 2008, Dave's right knee was replaced with a Biomet® Vanguard® Knee. Dave states, "I picked winter so it would not affect my fall bike riding, and I could rehab over the winter."

The Vanguard® Complete Knee System provides for a high degree of flexion, which benefits active patients like Dave. The first two weeks after surgery were difficult, but Dave continued to push himself. At four weeks after surgery, he attended his first spin class. As the weeks continued, he increased his length of time on the bike and his range of motion.

Dave said his pre-op workouts and post-op rehab were important contributors to his recovery. "I sit here very contented because I just rode 43 miles; 25 mph average on the flats and 22-23 mph average on the rolling hills. My riding group says I'm amazing considering I just had total knee replacement in December. I won't wait as long to have the other knee done knowing what a success I have experienced. I am so happy I made the decision to have the surgery."

While the patient in this story is a true joint replacement recipient, his results are not necessarily typical, indicative, or representative of all joint replacement patients. This device has been used successfully in achieving restored mobility to many patients. However, as with any implanted device, there are factors affecting performance which ultimately result in variable outcomes, including levels of mobility and pain. These factors include, but are not limited to, the patient's pre and post-operative health conditions, weight, activity level, and adherence to instructions regarding the use of the joint implants. Due to these variables, it is not possible to predict specific results or patient satisfaction.
