Brady C, Vang S, Christensen K, et al. Use of autologous platelet gel in bariatric surgery. JECT 2006;38:161-64.
Summary: For a series of 10 patients, autologous platelet gel was applied to anastomotic sites during a laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass. The platelet gel was applied to the gastro-jejunostomy, side-by-side jejuno-jejunostomy, and stomach staple line. No leaks were found during postoperative discharge, and no adverse events related to the application of platelet gel were reported.
Quotation: "Some of the benefits expected from autologous platelet gel include enhanced hemostatic response, angiogenesis, accelerated tissue regeneration, enhanced collagen synthesis, increased leukocyte concentration, and native fibrinogen concentration imparting a gelatinous adhesive."
Jackson RF. Using platelet-rich plasma to promote healing and prevent seroma formation in abdominoplasty procedures.
Summary: 30 patients undergoing elective abdominoplasty procedures received platelet-rich plasma applications during the procedure. No seroma were found in the 30 patients. The historical record of 100 patients demonstrated a prior seroma formation rate of 7%. Anecdotally, the wounds seemed to heal more rapidly with improved aesthetic results.
Quotation: "The increase in healing and improved patient recovery time makes this a technique that needs further study and increased application to determine efficacy in other cosmetic surgical procedures."
