Gross CW, Gallagher R, Schlosser RJ, Burks SG, Flanagan HL, Mintz P, Avery NL, Maybers SL, Spotnitz WD. Autologous fibrin sealant reduces pain after tonsillectomy. Laryngoscope 2001;111(2):259-63.
Summary: A randomized, blinded, controlled clinical trial, tonsillectomy was performed on 20 children aged 5 to 17. Half of the children received treatment with autologous fibrin sealant and the other half received standard treatment. The sealant was made by cryoprecipitation from 40ml of pre-donated blood. Fibrin sealant application at the surgical site was found to be associated with a significantly lower reduction of pain the night after operation and a decreased chance of emesis.
Quotation: “Our study suggests that such trials [large prospective clinical trials] may show significant benefit from fibrin sealant use in this setting, especially in the immediate postoperative period.”
